In a data-dependent world, virtually all of society relies on data remaining accessible 24/7. However, despite our dependency, we have yet to create fail-proof storage. Storage media can and will fail. In most cases, it is only a matter of when.

Most of the time, data loss happens when some physical or logical errors are introduced into a system. At other times, data could have been accidentally deleted. The lucky ones would have dutifully done their back-ups. The really unlucky ones may find that their back-ups have failed.
